MUSCAT: Foot traffic at the traditional Muttrah Souq leading up to Eid had been slow until the weekend, but since Thursday, the market has been vibrant with neon lights and colourful displays as families from across Oman gather to prepare for the upcoming Eid Al Adha celebrations.

Citizens and expatriates are browsing for a variety of items, from incense burners and frankincense to clothing, footwear and household essentials. Vendors have noted an improvement in foot traffic compared to last year, although it has not reached pre-holiday levels.

"Business has been decent, thanks to Allah. There has been a gradual increase in activity since last week, but there is still a sense of caution in the air," said Mohammed Navas Chengala, a businessman and social worker in Muttrah.

Demand is highest for men's and women's clothing, followed by children's wear, fragrances like oud and attar, and traditional goods. Food, fruits, oils and vegetables are also selling steadily. While malls and larger stores are busy in the evenings, traders in Ruwi and traditional souqs in Salalah, Suhar, Barka, Nizwa and Sur are welcoming visitors throughout the day.

Despite flight cancellations affecting foreign shoppers, vendors have stocked up from overseas and local markets. Local customers from Muscat and surrounding villages are still coming, but the lack of foreign business has been noticeable. Tailors, however, are working tirelessly to meet the demands of repeat customers during this busy season.

The Consumer Protection Authority (CPA) has increased market monitoring and is cracking down on price gouging. Several establishments have been penalised for violations, and suppliers are being urged to maintain transparency. Consumers are encouraged to report any breaches through official channels and to verify information before sharing.
